Getting sober is an important thing to do, and it doesn’t matter what time of day or date of the year you choose to get sober. It’s an action that can save your life. It can also help you learn to cope with your feelings and begin to feel comfortable in your own skin again.

Many people with substance use disorder have a challenging time around the holidays. The holiday season can be a particularly turbulent time for people with a history of trauma. Or they may guilt and shame they associate with their family and their addictive behavior.

You may have a history of using your substance of choice heavily this time of year. You know it's not a safe or healthy thing to do. You don’t have to self-medicate to get through the holiday season. There’s another way. Recovery is possible for anyone willing to reach out for help and follow suggestions.

Detox and Treatment during the holidays

If you want to get help for a substance use disorder during the holidays, you have choices. Many people need to detox from drugs with clinical oversight so that their withdrawal symptoms are manageable. A doctor or other medical professional can monitor you if you go to a treatment center or detox center.

Getting sober can seem difficult at first, but it’s a life-saving and life-affirming action. Likewise, Detoxing is not fun, but you’ll be in a supportive environment where you’ll find community among your peers. In addition, clinical oversight will help you remain comfortable while your body rids itself of substances.

A detox center will usually host group therapy and have 12-step meetings. You won’t be alone; there will be activities and shared meals. You’ll also be in a supportive environment that wants you to get healthy.

Your family might not understand exactly why you choose to get sober this time of year. It's your choice to confide in the family members you choose to. You probably have people in your life who will be happy to know you are getting help!
